Applications of Lasers
A laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) produces light that is highly coherent, monochromatic, directional, and intense. Due to these properties, lasers have a wide range of applications.
1. Industrial Applications
- Cutting and welding: High-power lasers are used for precise cutting and welding of metals and other materials.
- Drilling: Very small and accurate holes can be produced in hard materials.
- Marking: Lasers are used to mark serial numbers, barcodes, and designs on industrial products.
- Heat treatment: Laser beams can locally heat and modify the surface properties of materials.
2. Medical Applications
- Eye surgery: Lasers are used in procedures such as LASIK and retinal treatments.
- Surgery: Laser beams can cut or remove tissues with high precision and reduced bleeding.
- Dentistry: Lasers are used for treating dental cavities and soft-tissue procedures.
- Cancer treatment: Certain lasers are used in photodynamic therapy and other specialized treatments.
3. Communication
- Lasers are used in optical-fibre communication because they can transmit large amounts of information over long distances.
- Laser light provides a high-frequency carrier for transmitting voice, video, and digital data.
4. Scientific and Research Applications
- Spectroscopy: Lasers are used to study the structure and properties of atoms and molecules.
- Interferometry: Highly coherent laser light is used for precise measurements of distance, wavelength, and small displacements.
- Holography: Lasers provide the coherent light required to produce holograms.
5. Defence and Military Applications
- Laser range finders are used to determine distances accurately.
- Laser target designation is used to identify and track targets.
- Lasers are also used in optical guidance and specialized directed-energy systems.
6. Communication and Navigation
- Lasers are used in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) for measuring distances and mapping objects.
- They are used in surveying, atmospheric measurements, and autonomous navigation systems.
7. Consumer Applications
- Laser printers use laser beams to form images on a photosensitive drum.
- Barcode scanners use laser light to read printed codes.
- Optical disc systems such as CD and DVD players use lasers to read stored information.
- Laser pointers are used for presentations and demonstrations.
8. Measurement and Metrology
Because laser light is highly monochromatic and coherent, it is used for:
- Precise measurement of length and displacement
- Alignment of machines and structures
- Measurement of surface irregularities
- Determination of very small changes in position
9. Entertainment and Display
- Lasers are used in laser light shows, concerts, and stage effects.
- They are also used in certain projection and display technologies.
